Questions about using Lecture Mate
How far can I be from the lecturer whilst achieving good quality recordings?

As with all recording devices the quality of the recording will depend on the environment, background noise and the positioning of the recorder relative to the source (those being recorded). For this reason we cannot guarantee high quality recordings under all circumstances.

Lecture Mate has an internal microphone which has proven to produce quality recordings within a range of auditoriums. In larger auditoriums, quality of recordings can usually be maintained whilst sitting further back in the auditorium since most lecturers now speak through microphones and speech is therefore relayed through auditorium sound systems. However, the best recordings will still be obtained by either sitting within the first few rows of the auditorium (particularly if the speaker is not speaking into a microphone) or placing Lecture Mate at the speakers desk at the front of the auditorium (which has become common practice at many universities).

The majority of our customers use our recorders in large lecture auditoriums and we have never had a return because a customer was not satisfied with the quality of the recording. However, to get the best from your recordings we advise playback via a computer rather than using the recorders internal speakers or earphones as the processing and amplification of sound is much better on your computer.

What format does Lecture Mate record in?

Recordings are saved as high quality MP3 audio files which can be accessed via your PC / Apple Mac by connecting the recorder directly to the USB port. Recordings can be played back using any media software such as i-tunes or Windows Media Player.

How easy is it to access and upload recordings to my computer?

Uploading recordings is very easy. It does not require software or USB cables. Lecture Mate functions as a 'USB stick' allowing easy access to recordings. Just plug Lecture Mate directly into any computer and your recordings will appear as they would on a USB stick allowing easy transfer of recordings to PC/Mac. Recordings can be listened to using i-tunes / windows media player or any other media software, burnt to CD or even attached in an email.

Can I record separate lectures as separate files?

Lectures are recorded as separate files allowing you to select which lecture to listen to when you connect Lecture Mate to your computer.

How many hours of lectures can I record in one go?

There is not a limit to the number of lectures that can be recorded. The battery will allow for up to 18 hours of recording and the 2GB memory is more than sufficient for weeks of lectures. Lectures can easily be saved to a computer before being deleted from the recorder.

How many folders does Lecture Mate hold?

There is not a limit to the number of recordings you Lecture Mate will store. Lecture Mate functions as a USB stick and all recordings are stored as separate files which appear when the recorder is connected to your PC USB port

Will Lecture Mate be good for recording musical instruments or vocals?

Although Lecture Mate has not been tested for all instruments, provided it is used within good proximity to instrument good quality MP3 recordings can be achieved. Lecture Mate also has an external device input should you wish to connect it to studio or other recording devices. Songs can easily be transferred to a PC / MAC or burnt to CD.

How long do the batteries last when fully charged?

A fully charged battery will last around 18 hours

Does Lecture Mate require an external microphone?

No, Lecture Mate has an internal microphone. However, Lecture Mate also comes with a free external wire lapel microphone that can be clipped to your jumper etc. if required.

How many hours of continuous recording can I fit on the lecture mate?

The 2GB memory allows for 555 hours of continuous recording in dictation mode and 34 hours when recording lectures (lecture recording requires greater quality of recording and therefore more memory). Note that 34 hours is usually more than sufficient since most users will transfer a day’s worth of recordings onto a PC at the end of each day.

Should I play back lectures on my computer or by the recorders speakers?

To get the best playback from lecture recordings it is recommended that recordings are replayed on a computer using i-tunes / Windows Media Player or any other media software.

Which software do you recommend for transcribing recordings directly from Lecture Mate into text?

We recommend Dragon Naturally Speaking
